Indonesia – Act 1

Race for Water begins one of the longest stop-overs in Indonesia where the Foundation’s vessel will remain for two months; Bali to start with and then followed by Jakarta.

The waste situation in Indonesia is critical. Some sources estimate that 3,2 million tons of plastic waste originating from Indonesia enters the oceans each year. It is the world’s second largest waste producing country.

Following China’s decision to stop being the world’s “rubbish dump” importing Eastern countries plastic waste, Indonesia’s plastic imports have risen by 56% in 2018*.

Members of the Foundation will be meeting street collectors, who work in truly difficult conditions collecting and sorting waste.

A press conference to host official authorities will be held on Tuesday 11th of June followed by a number of school visits from the Green School on Wednesday 12th of June and a workshop on Thursday 13th to discuss the “Transformation of Waste to Energy”.

The catamaran will make headway for Jakarta from 13th to 19th of June.
