Key decision-makers on board!

Today the Race for Water vessel held its “Plastic Waste to Energy” workshop on board in Kota Kinabalu. With the aim of facilitating discussion and collaboration between as many people as possible, the Race for Water team hosted two separate sessions – a first for the odyssey!

The workshops brought together a number of key local players, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC), the Sabah Environment Action Centre, Kota Kinabalu City Hall, 24 government municipalities, and the head of waste management of Sabah.

ACT programme leader Camille Rollin led the talks during the workshop, together with president of the foundation Marco Simeoni. Cik. Ilya Najha Binti Jazan from MESTECC gave a presentation outlining Malaysia’s Roadmap to Zero Single-Use Plastic and ex-mayor of Kota Kinabalu Datuk Yeo Boon Hai explained how, despite being one of the earliest states in Malaysia to take action for the environment, the battle against plastic pollution in the region still has a long way to go.

It was greatly encouraging to liaise with all those present regarding future alliances in order to tackle the complex and growing issue of plastic waste in the area!
